Oedipus The King
Oedipus the King is an ancient Greek play that was written
by Sophocles in the 450’s B.C, and the fact that it was written
almost 2400 years ago still fascinates me. The plot, the storyline is great.
The way things shape up, the intensity
of the story is just marvelous. How can something that was written 2 and a half
milleniums ago be this good? You would expect the story to be simple, and easy
to grasp, but it is
definitely otherwise. The story is more complex, the characters are more
complex than even today’s
plays played in theaters. Also, you hardly get bored when reading it, because
it does not take to much
time to reach the climax of the play, and once you get there, you just flow through the end of
the story without noticing. Since I do not know ancient Greek language, I read the translated
version and I feel like I have to give credit to the translator, too. The
translator did a brilliant job
preserving the essence of the story while translating it.
